Linking Your Visit with PA Academic Standards

Standards
Mock Turtle has designed the Young Reader Field Trip to conform to a full set of academic standards established by the Commonwealth. The following citations are based on the extended field trip program which includes a visit to natural and historic sites, a content rich theatrical experience, a hands-on art project, a follow-up writing project based on curricular materials and various other culminating activities. Included in the educational package supplied to the school is a study guide that clearly describes all associated activities and the standards addressed.

Lesson Title: Early Reader Field Trip
Our Early Reader Field Trip combines a performance of Book, Beast and Puppet, a puppet-making workshop and a follow-up language arts lesson.  The central lesson in our study guide is the creation of puppet skits using the puppets made during the field trip. These skits and monologues reflect on the play and the historic content of the play and exercise a number of standards in the areas of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, History and the Arts and Humanities. Other lessons outlined in our study guide focus more on Science and Technology, Environment and Ecology and Geography.

Below is a full description of the various Pennsylvania Educational Standards addressed in our study guide:
1.1.3 Learning to Read Independently
A. Identify the purposes and types of text (e.g., literature, information) before reading. (Pre-Trip Discussion)
B. Acquire a reading vocabulary by identifying and correctly using words (e.g., antonyms, synonyms, categories of words). Use a dictionary when appropriate. (Post-Trip Review)

 

1.3.3 Reading, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
C. Identify literary devices in stories (e.g., rhyme, rhythm, personification). (Post-Trip Review)
D. Identify the structures in drama (e.g., stories, poems, plays).

 

1.4 Types of Writing

  1. Write narrative pieces (e.g., stories, poems, plays).
  • Include detailed descriptions of people, places and things.
  • Use relevant illustrations.
  • Include literary elements (Follow-up Classroom Lesson) (Standard 1.3.3.B.)

 

1.5 Quality of Writing
A. Write with a sharp, distinct focus identifying topic, task and audience.

  • Write with controlled and/or subtle organization.
  • Sustain a logical order.
  • Include a recognizable beginning, middle and end. (Classroom Lesson)

1.6 Speaking and Listening
A. Listen to others.

  • Ask questions as an aid to understanding. (Puppet Show)
  • Distinguish fact from opinion

B. Listen to a selection of literature (fiction and/or nonfiction).

  • Relate it to similar experiences.

  • Retell a story in chronological order.
  • Recognize character and tone.
  • Identify and define new words and concepts. (Word Walk)

C. Speak using skills appropriate to formal speech situations.

  • Use appropriate volume.
