Linking Your Visit to PA Academic Standards

  Standards
  All Lehigh Valley Zoo student programs support and address selected PA Academic Standards.

  Sample Curriculum Activities
  ANIMAL LIFE CYCLES - These activities were written to coincide with second and third grade, but can be easily adapted to fit any grade level.

The following is an example of how you can use the Lehigh Valley Zoo and its programs to coincide with your school's curriculum. This unit includes activities that integrate all subject areas.

The entries under each activity correspond to the Pennsylvania Standard used in that particular subject area. For complete descriptions of each activity, please contact the Lehigh Valley Zoo at 610-799-4171 to request a copy of the Zoo Activity Packet (ZAP) titled Animal Life Cycles.


   
  PRE-VISIT ACTIVITIES:
  1. Home Sweet Home - identify the basic survival needs shared by humans and other living things, including food, water, shelter, and space.

  2. Life Cycle Sequencing Game - compare the human life cycle to other animal life cycles, list three general types of life cycles, and place various animal life cycle stages in the correct order.

  3. Animal Observation Activity - apply the observation process to the life cycle of a live specimen and observe/identify the different stages of its life cycle while recording data throughout the entire process.

  4. Animal Authorities I - become an animal authority on one animal at the Game Preserve by gathering information such as the animal's natural habitat, type of life cycle, adaptations, social behavior, and more.

  1. Zoo Tour Scavenger Hunt - locate and gather information about specific animals at the Game Preserve.

  2. Life Cycle Classroom Activity at the Zoo - this program is led by Game Preserve Education Staff and will include a live animal presentation focusing on life cycles along with hands-on, interactive activities.

  3. Animal Authorities II - a continuation of the pre-visit activity, observe and record data about the animal chosen earlier during your visit to the Game Preserve.

  4. Mystery Animals - solve the various mystery animals using clues on the handout provided by the Game Preserve.

  1. Animal Authorities III - using the data that was collected during the Game Preserve visit, put it in a form to present to the class.

  2. Are You Me? - match various young stages of animal life cycles with the corresponding adult stages.
