“New” exhibits at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum!
Two special exhibits, on display through July, 2010, explore the Civil War, the issues that caused the conflict, and the president who led America through it.
Discover Pennsylvania’s vital role in the development of coal, oil, and electric. Hands-on, interactive activities will explore the production of electricity as well as the importance of electrical energy and how to conserve it. A great exhibit!

Compare experiences of Native Americans, early settlers and later city dwellers as you discover how people cooperated to meet their basic needs and wants using local resources. Hands-on activities including corn to grind, clothes to try on, and more.

The year is 1890 as classes explore the exhibit in small groups, each representing an industry seeking to settle in the area or a township eager to attract industries with its resources. A primary document study is included.
Changing exhibits
“Abraham Lincoln” & “The Civil War: America at the Crossroads” Two related exhibits for group tours October 15, 2009-July, 2010. Discover the Civil War from all perspectives—North, South, and Slave. Learn how the Lehigh Valley supported the war to save the Union.
Explore Abraham Lincoln’s leadership in reuniting the nation. Primary grade students who have not yet studied the Civil War may choose to tour only the Lincoln exhibit if they wish. Special interactive 1-hour tours cost $5.00/student and are adapted to all grades.
Historic Trout Hall, Allentown
Grades 1 up; 1¼ hr; 1-2 classes; April-November
Built in 1770, Trout Hall was the colonial stone mansion of James Allen, son of Allentown’s founder. Step into the world of colonial America. Grades 1-3 explore the family’s daily life, while grades 4 and up learn about patriots and loyalists in Revolutionary War-era Pennsylvania. Students can practice writing with a quill pen or try on colonial-era clothing.
“Historic” Troxell-Steckel Farm, Egypt
Regular Tour
Grades 1 and up; 1½ hr; 1-2 classes; April-Oct.
Explore an 1842 Pennsylvania German farm and imaginatively “meet” the Steckels. Experience farm life as you try a butter churn, explore home remedies, or handle farm tools.
Holiday Tour
All ages; 1 hr; 1-2 classes; Dec. 8-15: 9:30, 10:45, 1:00
Costumed guides portraying Steckel family members lead a journey through holiday preparations in 1842. Join in songs and games, hear holiday tales, decorate a tree, and learn period cooking.
Claussville One-room School, Claussville
Grades 1 up; 1¾ hr; 1 class; April-Nov.;
This 1893 schoolhouse was the last in the county to close in 1956. When the bell rings out, students assume the roles of 1927 pupils as they re-enact part of a school day, including lessons, a spelling bee, and recess games.
Haines Mill, Cetronia
Regular Tour
Grades 3 and up; 1 hr; 1-2 classes; April-Oct.
Your tour takes you back to the 1920s and introduces you to the miller’s son, Wilbur Haines. Hands-on grinding and sifting are included, as well as seeing the mill in action.
The Little Red Hen
Preschool-Grade 3; 1 hr; 1-2 classes; April-Oct.
Students experience the story of “The Little Red Hen” first-hand as they handle grain, use old-fashioned farm tools, see the mill in action, and grind their own grain.
Lock Ridge Furnace, Alburtis
Grades 3 up.; 1½ hr; 1-2 classes; April-Nov.;
Twelve-hour shifts, hot dangerous work, and company houses and church tell the story of the Industrial Revolution. Come explore the lives of actual 1910 ironworkers as you tour this 1868 iron furnace and nearby company town.
