  A CENTURY AT BURNSIDE PLANTATION - 2 1/2 hrs. - includes all 5 units below.
AT HOME ON THE FARM - 1 1/2 hrs. - includes units 1-3 below.
AT WORK ON THE FARM - 1 1/2 hrs. - includes units 3-5 below.

  1. "Little Cot" - Students hear basic information about James and Mary Burnside and their farmhouse "Little Cot." Using a copy of the original estate inventory, students search for "out of place" items in the house and, in the process, discover the lifestyles of its inhabitants.

  2. From Field, Garden and Orchard to the Table - Students learn about early foodways and the importance of the farm, orchard and kitchen garden to an early American family. Students perform a typical kitchen task and have a taste of a favorite colonial food in the summer kitchen.

  3. The Ecology and Economy of the Farm - Students discover how early settlers provided for their needs through thoughtful use of their environment and a resourceful, frugal lifestyle. A thought-provoking match game proves that colonial Americans were ingenious recyclers.

  5. The Barn - Students explore various parts of the barn to understand the importance of this structure to the life of the farm. Information is shared on barn architecture and design and some aspects of barn construction. A kid-size barn model affords students the opportunity to participate in their own barn raising.
